Why do bright lights make migraine headaches worse?

Most patients with migraine complain of light sensitivity during a headache. What many of them mean is that light actually makes their head pain worse. Until recently, we did not understand why this happens. At the recent Annual Scientific Meeting of the American Headache Society in Los Angeles, Dr R. Burstein of Harvard Medical School reported on research which seems to provide an answer.
